Online course: Art in Northern Europe in the Renaissance

Thursday 12th February 2026

A 5-week course of lectures on Northern European art in the 15th and 16th centuries on Zoom, running from 12 February to 12 March on Thursday evenings. The talks will be recorded, so you don't have to be able to watch live. The ticket link takes you to the individual lectures - you can sign up for individual sessions or for all five. If you buy all five at any point, you will be sent any lectures you have missed. Each week of the course will take a single work and use it as the focal point to explore particular themes.

Week 1: Jan Van Eyck, The Arnolfini Portrait (1434)

Week 2: Claus Sluter, The Well of Moses (1403)

Week 3: Albrecht Durer, Self-portrait with a Fur Collar (1500)

Week 4: Holbein, The Ambassadors (1534)

Week 5: Bruegel, Hunters in the Snow (1565)

This is such a wonderful and interesting period in art history, often overshadowed by the great Italian art of the period but with its own strength and beauty and its commentary and insight into European culture at a fascinating time.

The lecturer is Dr Victoria Mier, a specialist in Northern art in the Renaissance.

All talks are on Zoom, starting at 7pm and lasting about 50 minutes plus time for questions, if you are watching live.

The ticket links for each individual session also allow you to buy all five at a discount, whichever link you click on.
