Looking at Paintings (on Zoom)
Thursday 3rd July 2025 from 19:30 until 20:30

We will look at a painting together, just to learn about looking (as well as a bit about the painting of course). Close looking at visual details and thinking about the impact the painting has on you - about thoughts, feelings, personal response.
The painting will be a surprise each time, once a month, so that you come to it fresh. It will always be interesting in its own way and, in my opinion, beautiful. I will do other sessions on specific paintings, themes, artists.
We will spend around an hour looking at the painting together, and I will add some art-historical context.
My background is in Renaissance art, but I will choose a variety of paintings from different periods. Some may be familiar, some may be very familiar, some you may never have seen before. The principles of looking are the same. Sometimes it will be a painting I don't know particularly well, so I will be applying my own principles of looking too.
I am Dr Victoria Mier, I have a PhD in art history from Bristol University. But the sessions are very much open to everyone, just a chance to look at something beautiful for about an hour, and to equip yourselves with tips for looking at paintings.
