Rembrandt and Vermeer

A 5-week course, but talks also stand alone.

A series of online talks looking at the art of Rembrandt and Vermeer, their place in 17th-century Dutch art, their relationship with the art of the past, but mostly just investigating their art and what makes it so special. They are very different on the surface but part of the same culture and with more in common than might at first appear.

You can book for the whole series or for individual talks. All talks will be recorded, so if you can't make the live session you can watch the recording - everyone who books, whether they attend or not, will be sent the video.

NB The live sessions have started but you can still book for the whole course or any individual talks you have missed and receive the recording.

Zoom is actually a nice way to look at paintings - you can look at details in close-up, and being able to watch back means you can look at images at your own pace.

The talks will be as follows:
Week 1: Rembrandt - an overview (2 July)
Week 2: Vermeer - an overview (9 July)
Week 3: Rembrandt and Vermeer and the depiction of women (16 July)
Week 4: Vermeer and earlier Northern painting (30 July)
Week 5: Rembrandt and Vermeer in the context of other Dutch art of the 17th century (6 August)
NB: no session on 23 July

£40 for the whole series, £10 for an individual lecture.
Zoom links will be sent near and/or on the day of the talk.

Talks start at 7.30pm and last about an hour.

Lecturer is Dr Victoria Mier (PhD Bristol) who specialises in the art of Northern Europe, especially from the Middle Ages to the Early Modern period.
